Chapter 41

 I thank all who have loved me in their hearts,

With thanks and love from mine.  Deep thanks to all

Who paused a little near the prison-wall

To hear my music in its louder parts

Ere they went onward¹, each one to the mart’s

Or temple’s occupation, beyond call.

But thou, who, in my voice’s sink and fall

When the sob² took it, thy divinest Art’s

Own instrument didst drop down at thy foot

To harken what I said between my tears, . . .

Instruct me how to thank thee!  Oh, to shoot

My soul’s full meaning into future years,

That they should lend it utterance³, and salute⁴

Love that endures, from life that disappears!

 

1 onward   

adj.向前的，前进的；adv.向前，前进，在先

2 sob

3 utterance   

n.用言语表达，话语，言语

• This utterance of his was greeted with bursts of uproarious laughter.他的讲话引起阵阵哄然大笑。
• My voice cleaves to my throat,and sob chokes my utterance.我的噪子哽咽，泣不成声。

4 salute   

vi.行礼，致意，问候，放礼炮；vt.向…致意，迎接，赞扬；n.招呼，敬礼，礼炮

参考例句：

• Merchant ships salute each other by dipping the flag.商船互相点旗致敬。
• The Japanese women salute the people with formal bows in welcome.这些日本妇女以正式的鞠躬向人们施礼以示欢迎。
