Pairing Time Anticipated

 

 

  I shall not ask Jean Jacques Rousseau

  If birds confabulate or no;

  'Tis clear that they were always able

  To hold discourse¹, at least in fable²;

  And e'en the child who knows no better

  Than to interpret by the letter

  A story of a cock and bull

  Must have a most uncommon³ skull⁴.

  It chanced then on a winter day,

  But warm and bright and calm as May,

  The Birds conceiving a design

  To forestall⁵ sweet Saint Valentine,

  In many an orchard⁶, copse and grove⁷,

  Assembled on affairs of love,

  A Finch¹⁰, whose tongue knew no control,

  Dick heard, and tweedling, ogling¹⁷, bridling¹⁸;

  With many a strut¹⁹ and many a sidling,
