[kjv] How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary! [bbe] See her seated by herself, the town which was full of people! She who was great among the nations has become like a widow! She who was a princess among the countries has come under the yoke of forced work! [kjv] She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies. [bbe] She is sorrowing bitterly in the night, and her face is wet with weeping; among all her lovers she has no comforter: all her friends have been false to her, they have become her haters. [kjv] Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits. [bbe] Judah has been taken away as a prisoner because of trouble and hard work; her living-place is among the nations, there is no rest for her: all her attackers have overtaken her in a narrow place. [kjv] The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts: all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness. [bbe] The ways of Zion are sad, because no one comes to the holy meeting; all her doorways are made waste, her priests are breathing out sorrow: her virgins are troubled, and it is bitter for her. [kjv] Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. [bbe] Those who are against her have become the head, everything goes well for her haters; for the Lord has sent sorrow on her because of the great number of her sins: her young children have gone away as prisoners before the attacker. [kjv] And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed: her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer. [bbe] And all her glory has gone from the daughter of Zion: her rulers have become like harts with no place for food, and they have gone in flight without strength before the attacker. [kjv] Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her: the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths. [bbe] Jerusalem keeps in mind, in the days of her sorrow and of her wanderings, all the desired things which were hers in days gone by; when her people came into the power of her hater and she had no helper, her attackers saw their desire effected on her and made sport of her destruction. [kjv] Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed: all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward. [bbe] Great is the sin of Jerusalem; for this cause she has become an unclean thing: all those who gave her honour are looking down on her, because they have seen her shame: now truly, breathing out grief, she is turned back. [kjv] Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my affliction: for the enemy hath magnified himself. [bbe] In her skirts were her unclean ways; she gave no thought to her end; and her fall has been a wonder; she has no comforter: see her sorrow, O Lord; for the attacker is lifted up. 1:10 [hgb] 敌 人 伸 手 , 夺 取 她 的 美 物 。 [kjv] The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation. [bbe] The hand of her hater is stretched out over all her desired things; for she has seen that the nations have come into her holy place, about whom you gave orders that they were not to come into the meeting of your people. [kjv] All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become vile. [bbe] Breathing out grief all her people are looking for bread; they have given their desired things for food to give them life: see, O Lord, and take note; for she has become a thing of shame. [kjv] Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. [bbe] Come to me, all you who go by! Keep your eyes on me, and see if there is any pain like the pain of my wound, which the Lord has sent on me in the day of his burning wrath. [kjv] From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day. [bbe] From on high he has sent fire into my bones, and it has overcome them: his net is stretched out for my feet, I am turned back by him; he has made me waste and feeble all the day. [kjv] The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the LORD hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up. [bbe] A watch is kept on my sins; they are joined together by his hand, they have come on to my neck; he has made my strength give way: the Lord has given me up into the hands of those against whom I have no power. [kjv] The LORD hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the LORD hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress. [bbe] The Lord has made sport of all my men of war in me, he has got men together against me to send destruction on my young men: the virgin daughter of Judah has been crushed like grapes under the feet of the Lord. [kjv] For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed. [bbe] For these things I am weeping; my eye is streaming with water; because the comforter who might give me new life is far from me: my children are made waste, because the hater is strong. [kjv] Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her: the LORD hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him: Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them. [bbe] Zion's hands are outstretched; she has no comforter; the Lord has given orders to the attackers of Jacob round about him: Jerusalem has become like an unclean thing among them. [kjv] The LORD is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity. [bbe] The Lord is upright; for I have gone against his orders: give ear, now, all you peoples, and see my pain, my virgins and my young men have gone away as prisoners. [kjv] I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls. [bbe] I sent for my lovers, but they were false to me: my priests and my responsible men were breathing their last breath in the town, while they were looking for food to give them new life. [kjv] Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death. [bbe] See, O Lord, for I am in trouble; the inmost parts of my body are deeply moved; my heart is turned in me; for I have been uncontrolled: outside the children are put to the sword, and in the house there is death. [kjv] They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me. [bbe] Give ear to the voice of my grief; I have no comforter; all my haters have news of my troubles, they are glad because you have done it: let the day of fate come when they will be like me. 1:22 [hgb] 愿 他 们 的 恶 行 都 呈 在 你 面 前 。 [kjv] Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint. [bbe] Let all their evil-doing come before you; do to them as you have done to me for all my sins: for loud is the sound of my grief, and the strength of my heart is gone. [kjv] How hath the LORD covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger! [bbe] How has the daughter of Zion been covered with a cloud by the Lord in his wrath! he has sent down from heaven to earth the glory of Israel, and has not kept in memory the resting-place of his feet in the day of his wrath. [kjv] The LORD hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof. [bbe] The Lord has given up to destruction all the living-places of Jacob without pity; pulling down in his wrath the strong places of the daughter of Judah, stretching out on the earth the wounded, even her king and her rulers. [kjv] He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about. [bbe] In his burning wrath every horn of Israel has been cut off; his right hand has been turned back before the attacker: he has put a fire in Jacob, causing destruction round about. [kjv] He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his fury like fire. [bbe] His bow has been bent for the attack, he has taken his place with his hand ready, in his hate he has put to death all who were pleasing to the eye: on the tent of the daughter of Zion he has let loose his passion like fire. [kjv] The LORD was as an enemy: he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation. [bbe] The Lord has become like one fighting against her, sending destruction on Israel; he has sent destruction on all her great houses, making waste his strong places: increasing the grief and the sorrow of the daughter of Judah. [kjv] And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest. [bbe] And he has violently taken away his tent, as from a garden; he has made waste his meeting-place: the Lord has taken away the memory of feast and Sabbath in Zion, and in the passion of his wrath he is against king and priest. [kjv] The LORD hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast. [bbe] The Lord has given up his altar and has been turned in hate from his holy place; he has given up into the hands of the attacker the walls of her great houses: their voices have been loud in the house of the Lord as in the day of a holy meeting. [kjv] The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together. [bbe] It is the Lord's purpose to make waste the wall of the daughter of Zion; his line has been stretched out, he has not kept back his hand from destruction: he has sent sorrow on tower and wall, they have become feeble together. [kjv] Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD. [bbe] Her doors have gone down into the earth; he has sent destruction on her locks: her king and her princes are among the nations where the law is not; even her prophets have had no vision from the Lord. [kjv] The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground. [bbe] The responsible men of the daughter of Zion are seated on the earth without a word; they have put dust on their heads, they are clothed in haircloth: the heads of the virgins of Jerusalem are bent down to the earth. [kjv] Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city. [bbe] My eyes are wasted with weeping, the inmost parts of my body are deeply moved, my inner parts are drained out on the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because of the young children and babies at the breast who are falling without strength in the open squares of the town. [kjv] They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers' bosom. [bbe] They say to their mothers, Where is grain and wine? when they are falling like the wounded in the open squares of the town, when their life is drained out on their mother's breast. [kjv] What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee? [bbe] What example am I to give you? what comparison am I to make for you, O daughter of Jerusalem? what am I to make equal to you, so that I may give you comfort, O virgin daughter of Zion? for your destruction is great like the sea: who is able to make you well? [kjv] Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment. [bbe] The visions which your prophets have seen for you are false and foolish; they have not made clear to you your sin so that your fate might be changed: but they have seen for you false words, driving you away. [kjv] All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth? [bbe] All who go by make a noise with their hands at you; they make hisses, shaking their heads at the daughter of Jerusalem, and saying, Is this the town which was the crown of everything beautiful, the joy of all the earth? [kjv] All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it. [bbe] All your haters are opening their mouths wide against you; making hisses and whistling through their teeth, they say, We have made a meal of her: certainly this is the day we have been looking for; it has come, we have seen it. 2:17 [hgb] 耶 和 华 成 就 了 他 所 定 的 , 应 验 了 他 古 时 所 命 定 的 。 [kjv] The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries. [bbe] The Lord has done that which was his purpose; he has put into force the orders which he gave in the days which are past; pulling down without pity, he has made your hater glad over you, lifting up the horn of those who were against you. [kjv] Their heart cried unto the LORD, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease. [bbe] Let your cry go up to the Lord: O wall of the daughter of Zion, let your weeping be flowing down like a stream day and night; give yourself no rest, let not your eyes keep back the drops of sorrow. [kjv] Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the LORD: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street. [bbe] Up! give cries in the night, at the starting of the night-watches; let your heart be flowing out like water before the face of the Lord, lifting up your hands to him for the life of your young children who are falling down, feeble for need of food, at the top of every street. [kjv] Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord? [bbe] Look! O Lord, see to whom you have done this! Are the women to take as their food the fruit of their bodies, the children who are folded in their arms? are the priest and the prophet to be put to death in the holy place of the Lord? [kjv] The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied. [bbe] The young men and the old are stretched on the earth in the streets; my virgins and my young men have been put to the sword: you have sent death on them in the day of your wrath, causing death without pity. [kjv] Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD's anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed. [bbe] As in the day of a holy meeting you have made fears come round me on every side, and no one got away or was kept safe in the day of the Lord's wrath: those who were folded in my arms, whom I took care of, have been sent to their destruction by my hater. [kjv] I AM the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. [bbe] I am the man who has seen trouble by the rod of his wrath. [kjv] He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. [bbe] By him I have been made to go in the dark where there is no light. [kjv] Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day. [bbe] Truly against me his hand has been turned again and again all the day. [kjv] My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones. [bbe] My flesh and my skin have been used up by him and my bones broken. [kjv] He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail. [bbe] He has put up a wall against me, shutting me in with bitter sorrow. [kjv] He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old. [bbe] He has kept me in dark places, like those who have been long dead. [kjv] He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy. [bbe] He has put a wall round me, so that I am not able to go out; he has made great the weight of my chain. [kjv] Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer. [bbe] Even when I send up a cry for help, he keeps my prayer shut out. [kjv] He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked. [bbe] He has put up a wall of cut stones about my ways, he has made my roads twisted. [kjv] He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places. [bbe] He is like a bear waiting for me, like a lion in secret places. [kjv] He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate. [bbe] I have become the sport of all the peoples; I am their song all the day. [kjv] He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood. [bbe] He has made my life nothing but pain, he has given me the bitter root in full measure. [kjv] He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes. [bbe] Who is able to say a thing, and give effect to it, if it has not been ordered by the Lord? [kjv] Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good? [bbe] Do not evil and good come from the mouth of the Most High? [kjv] Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? [bbe] What protest may a living man make, even a man about the punishment of his sin? [kjv] Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. [bbe] Covering yourself with wrath you have gone after us, cutting us off without pity; 3:44 [hgb] 你 以 黑 云 遮 蔽 自 己 , 以 致 祷 告 不 得 透 入 。 [kjv] Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through. [bbe] Covering yourself with a cloud, so that prayer may not get through. [kjv] Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people. [bbe] You have made us like waste and that for which there is no use, among the peoples. [kjv] All our enemies have opened their mouths against us. [bbe] The mouths of all our haters are open wide against us. 3:47 [hgb] 恐 惧 和 陷 坑 , 残 害 和 毁 灭 , 都 临 近 我 们 。 [kjv] Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction. [bbe] Till the Lord's eye is turned on me, till he sees my trouble from heaven. [kjv] Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city. [bbe] The Lord is unkind to my soul, more than all the daughters of my town. [kjv] Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause. [bbe] They who are against me without cause have gone hard after me as if I was a bird; 3:53 [hgb] 他 们 使 我 的 命 在 牢 狱 中 断 绝 , 并 将 一 块 石 头 抛 在 我 身 上 。 [kjv] They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me. [bbe] They have put an end to my life in the prison, stoning me with stones. [kjv] Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off. [bbe] Waters were flowing over my head; I said, I am cut off. [kjv] I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon. [bbe] I was making prayer to your name, O Lord, out of the lowest prison. [kjv] Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. [bbe] My voice came to you; let not your ear be shut to my breathing, to my cry. [kjv] Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not. [bbe] You came near in the day when I made my prayer to you: you said, Have no fear. [kjv] O LORD, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life. [bbe] O Lord, you have taken up the cause of my soul, you have made my life safe. [kjv] O LORD, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause. [bbe] O Lord, you have seen my wrong; be judge in my cause. [kjv] Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me. [bbe] You have seen all the evil rewards they have sent on me, and all their designs against me. 3:61 [hgb] 耶 和 华 阿 , 你 听 见 他 们 辱 骂 我 的 话 , 知 道 他 们 向 我 所 设 的 计 , [kjv] Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me; [bbe] Their bitter words have come to your ears, O Lord, and all their designs against me; 3:62 [hgb] 并 那 些 起 来 攻 击 我 的 人 口 中 所 说 的 话 , 以 及 终 日 向 我 所 设 的 计 谋 。 [kjv] The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day. [bbe] The lips of those who came up against me, and their thoughts against me all the day. [kjv] Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick. [bbe] Take note of them when they are seated, and when they get up; I am their song. [kjv] Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. [bbe] You will give them their reward, O Lord, answering to the work of their hands. [kjv] Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them. [bbe] You will let their hearts be covered over with your curse on them. [kjv] Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD. [bbe] You will go after them in wrath, and put an end to them from under the heavens of the Lord. [kjv] How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street. [bbe] How dark has the gold become! how changed the best gold! the stones of the holy place are dropping out at the top of every street. [kjv] The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter! [bbe] The valued sons of Zion, whose price was the best gold, are looked on as vessels of earth, the work of the hands of the potter! [kjv] Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. [bbe] Even the beasts of the waste land have full breasts, they give milk to their young ones: the daughter of my people has become cruel like the ostriches in the waste land. [kjv] The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them. [bbe] The tongue of the child at the breast is fixed to the roof of his mouth for need of drink: the young children are crying out for bread, and no man gives it to them. [kjv] They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. [bbe] Those who were used to feasting on delicate food are wasted in the streets: those who as children were dressed in purple are stretched out on the dust. [kjv] For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her. [bbe] For the punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of Sodom, which was overturned suddenly without any hand falling on her. [kjv] Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire: [bbe] Her holy ones were cleaner than snow, they were whiter than milk, their bodies were redder than corals, their form was as the sapphire: 4:8 [hgb] 现 在 他 们 的 面 貌 比 煤 炭 更 黑 , 以 致 在 街 上 无 人 认 识 。 [kjv] Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick. [bbe] Their face is blacker than night; in the streets no one has knowledge of them: their skin is hanging on their bones, they are dry, they have become like wood. [kjv] They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field. [bbe] Those who have been put to the sword are better off than those whose death is caused by need of food; for these come to death slowly, burned up like the fruit of the field. [kjv] The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people. [bbe] The hands of kind-hearted women have been boiling their children; they were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people. [kjv] The LORD hath accomplished his fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof. [bbe] The Lord has given full effect to his passion, he has let loose his burning wrath; he has made a fire in Zion, causing the destruction of its bases. [kjv] The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem. [bbe] To the kings of the earth and to all the people of the world it did not seem possible that the attackers and the haters would go into the doors of Jerusalem. [kjv] For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her, [bbe] It is because of the sins of her prophets and the evil-doing of her priests, by whom the blood of the upright has been drained out in her. [kjv] They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments. [bbe] They are wandering like blind men in the streets, they are made unclean with blood, so that their robes may not be touched by men. [kjv] They cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more sojourn there. [bbe] Away! unclean! they were crying out to them, Away! away! let there be no touching: when they went away in flight and wandering, men said among the nations, There is no further resting-place for them. [kjv] The anger of the LORD hath divided them; he will no more regard them: they respected not the persons of the priests, they favoured not the elders. [bbe] The face of the Lord has sent them in all directions; he will no longer take care of them: they had no respect for the priests, they gave no honour to the old men. [kjv] As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us. [bbe] Our eyes are still wasting away in looking for our false help: we have been watching for a nation unable to give salvation. [kjv] They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come. [bbe] They go after our steps so that we may not go in our streets: our end is near, our days are numbered; for our end has come. [kjv] Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness. [bbe] Those who went after us were quicker than the eagles of the heaven, driving us before them on the mountains, waiting secretly for us in the waste land. [kjv] The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen. [bbe] Our breath of life, he on whom the holy oil was put, was taken in their holes; of whom we said, Under his shade we will be living among the nations. [kjv] Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked. [bbe] Have joy and be glad, O daughter of Edom, living in the land of Uz: the cup will be given to you in your turn, and you will be overcome with wine and your shame will be seen. [kjv] The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity: he will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover thy sins. [bbe] The punishment of your evil-doing is complete, O daughter of Zion; never again will he take you away as a prisoner: he will give you the reward of your evil-doing, O daughter of Edom; he will let your sin be uncovered. [kjv] Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach. [bbe] Keep in mind, O Lord, what has come to us: take note and see our shame. [kjv] Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens. [bbe] Our heritage is given up to men of strange lands, our houses to those who are not our countrymen. [kjv] We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows. [bbe] We are children without fathers, our mothers are like widows. [kjv] We have drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us. [bbe] We give money for a drink of water, we get our wood for a price. [kjv] Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest. [bbe] Our attackers are on our necks: overcome with weariness, we have no rest. [kjv] We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. [bbe] We have given our hands to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians so that we might have enough bread. [kjv] Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities. [bbe] Our fathers were sinners and are dead; and the weight of their evil-doing is on us. 5:8 [hgb] 奴 仆 辖 制 我 们 , 无 人 救 我 们 脱 离 他 们 的 手 。 [kjv] Servants have ruled over us: there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand. [bbe] Servants are ruling over us, and there is no one to make us free from their hands. [kjv] We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness. [bbe] We put our lives in danger to get our bread, because of the sword of the waste land. [kjv] Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine. [bbe] Our skin is heated like an oven because of our burning heat from need of food. [kjv] They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah. [bbe] They took by force the women in Zion, the virgins in the towns of Judah. [kjv] Princes are hanged up by their hand: the faces of elders were not honoured. [bbe] Their hands put princes to death by hanging: the faces of old men were not honoured. [kjv] They took the young men to grind, and the children fell under the wood.
