Chapter 1 1:1 [hgb] 耶 和 华 的 话 临 到 亚 米 太 的 儿 子 约 拿 , 说 , [kjv] Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, [bbe] And the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying, 1:2 [hgb] 你 起 来 往 尼 尼 微 大 城 去 , 向 其 中 的 居 民 呼 喊 。 [kjv] Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. [bbe] Up! go to Nineveh, that great town, and let your voice come to it; for their evil-doing has come up before me. 1:3 [hgb] 约 拿 却 起 来 , 逃 往 他 施 去 躲 避 耶 和 华 。 [kjv] But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. [bbe] And Jonah got up to go in flight to Tarshish, away from the Lord; and he went down to Joppa, and saw there a ship going to Tarshish: so he gave them the price of the journey and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the Lord. [kjv] But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. [bbe] And the Lord sent out a great wind on to the sea and there was a violent storm in the sea, so that the ship seemed in danger of being broken. [kjv] Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. [bbe] Then the sailors were full of fear, every man crying to his god; and the goods in the ship were dropped out into the sea to make the weight less. But Jonah had gone down into the inmost part of the ship where he was stretched out in a deep sleep. [kjv] So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. [bbe] And the ship's captain came to him and said to him, What are you doing sleeping? Up! say a prayer to your God, if by chance God will give a thought to us, so that we may not come to destruction. [kjv] And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. [bbe] And they said to one another, Come, let us put this to the decision of chance and see on whose account this evil has come on us. So they did so, and Jonah was seen to be the man. [kjv] Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? [bbe] Then they said to him, Now make clear to us what is your work, and where you come from? what is your country, and who are your people? [kjv] And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. [bbe] And he said to them, I am a Hebrew, a worshipper of the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. [kjv] Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. [bbe] And the men were in great fear, and they said to him, What is this you have done? For the men had knowledge of his flight from the Lord because he had not kept it from them. [kjv] Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. [bbe] And they said to him, What are we to do to you so that the sea may become calm for us? For the sea was getting rougher and rougher. [kjv] And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. [bbe] And he said to them, Take me up and put me into the sea, and the sea will become calm for you: for I am certain that because of me this great storm has come on you. [kjv] Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. [bbe] And the men were working hard to get back to the land, but they were not able to do so: for the sea got rougher and rougher against them. [kjv] Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. [bbe] So, crying to the Lord, they said, Give ear to our prayer, O Lord, give ear, and do not let destruction overtake us because of this man's life; do not put on us the sin of taking life without cause: for you, O Lord, have done what seemed good to you. [kjv] So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. [bbe] So they took Jonah up and put him into the sea: and the sea was no longer angry. [kjv] Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. [bbe] Then great was the men's fear of the Lord; and they made an offering to the Lord and took oaths to him. [kjv] Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. [bbe] And the Lord made ready a great fish to take Jonah into its mouth; and Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. Chapter 2 2:1 [hgb] 约 拿 在 鱼 腹 中 祷 告 耶 和 华 他 的 神 , [kjv] Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, [bbe] Then Jonah made prayer to the Lord his God from the inside of the fish, and said, 2:2 [hgb] 说 , 我 遭 遇 患 难 求 告 耶 和 华 , 你 就 应 允 我 。 [kjv] And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. [bbe] In my trouble I was crying to the Lord, and he gave me an answer; out of the deepest underworld I sent up a cry, and you gave ear to my voice. [kjv] For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. [bbe] For you have put me down into the deep, into the heart of the sea; and the river was round about me; all your waves and your rolling waters went over me. 2:4 [hgb] 我 说 , 我 从 你 眼 前 虽 被 驱 逐 , 我 仍 要 仰 望 你 的 圣 殿 。 [kjv] Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. [bbe] And I said, I have been sent away from before your eyes; how may I ever again see your holy Temple? [kjv] The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. [bbe] The waters were circling round me, even to the neck; the deep was about me; the sea-grass was twisted round my head. [kjv] I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. [bbe] I went down to the bases of the mountains; as for the earth, her walls were about me for ever: but you have taken up my life from the underworld, O Lord my God. 2:7 [hgb] 我 心 在 我 里 面 发 昏 的 时 候 , 我 就 想 念 耶 和 华 。 [kjv] When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. [bbe] When my soul in me was overcome, I kept the memory of the Lord: and my prayer came in to you, into your holy Temple. [kjv] They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. [bbe] The worshippers of false gods have given up their only hope. [kjv] But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. [bbe] But I will make an offering to you with the voice of praise; I will give effect to my oaths. Salvation is the Lord's. 2:10 [hgb] 耶 和 华 吩 咐 鱼 , 鱼 就 把 约 拿 吐 在 旱 地 上 。 [kjv] And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. [bbe] And at the Lord's order, the fish sent Jonah out of its mouth on to the dry land. Chapter 3 3:1 [hgb] 耶 和 华 的 话 , 二 次 临 到 约 拿 说 , [kjv] And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, [bbe] And the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, 3:2 [hgb] 你 起 来 , 往 尼 尼 微 大 城 去 , 向 其 中 的 居 民 宣 告 我 所 吩 咐 你 的 话 。 [kjv] Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. [bbe] Up! go to Nineveh, that great town, and give it the word which I have given you. [kjv] So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey. [bbe] So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh as the Lord had said. Now Nineveh was a very great town, three days' journey from end to end. [kjv] And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. [bbe] And Jonah first of all went a day's journey into the town, and crying out said, In forty days destruction will overtake Nineveh. [kjv] So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. [bbe] And the people of Nineveh had belief in God; and a time was fixed for going without food, and they put on haircloth, from the greatest to the least. [kjv] For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. [bbe] And the word came to the king of Nineveh, and he got up from his seat of authority, and took off his robe, and covering himself with haircloth, took his seat in the dust. [kjv] And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: [bbe] And he had it given out in Nineveh, By the order of the king and his great men, no man or beast, herd or flock, is to have a taste of anything; let them have no food or water: 3:8 [hgb] 人 与 牲 畜 都 当 披 上 麻 布 , 人 要 切 切 求 告 神 。 [kjv] But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. [bbe] And let man and beast be covered with haircloth, and let them make strong prayers to God: and let everyone be turned from his evil way and the violent acts of their hands. [kjv] Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? [bbe] Who may say that God will not be turned, changing his purpose and turning away from his burning wrath, so that destruction may not overtake us? 3:10 [hgb] 于 是 神 察 看 他 们 的 行 为 , 见 他 们 离 开 恶 道 , 他 就 后 悔 , 不 把 所 说 的 灾 祸 降 与 他 们 了 。 [kjv] And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. [bbe] And God saw what they did, how they were turned from their evil way; and God's purpose was changed as to the evil which he said he would do to them, and he did it not. [kjv] But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. [bbe] But this seemed very wrong to Jonah, and he was angry. [kjv] And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. [bbe] And he made prayer to the Lord and said, O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still in my country? This is why I took care to go in flight to Tarshish: for I was certain that you were a loving God, full of pity, slow to be angry and great in mercy, and ready to be turned from your purpose of evil. [kjv] Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. [bbe] So now, O Lord, give ear to my prayer and take my life from me; for death is better for me than life. [kjv] Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry? [bbe] And the Lord said, Have you any right to be angry? [kjv] So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. [bbe] Then Jonah went out of the town, and took his seat on the east side of the town and made himself a roof of branches and took his seat under its shade till he saw what would become of the town. [kjv] And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd. [bbe] And the Lord God made a vine come up over Jonah to give him shade over his head. And Jonah was very glad because of the vine. [kjv] But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered. [bbe] But early on the morning after, God made ready a worm for the destruction of the vine, and it became dry and dead. [kjv] And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. [bbe] Then when the sun came up, God sent a burning east wind: and so great was the heat of the sun on his head that Jonah was overcome, and, requesting death for himself, said, Death is better for me than life. [kjv] And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. [bbe] And the Lord said to Jonah, Have you any right to be angry about the vine? And he said, I have a right to be truly angry. [kjv] Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: [bbe] And the Lord said, You had pity on the vine, for which you did no work and for the growth of which you were not responsible; which came up in a night and came to an end in a night; 4:11 [hgb] 何 况 这 尼 尼 微 大 城 , 其 中 不 能 分 辨 左 手 右 手 的 有 十 二 万 多 人 , 并 有 许 多 牲 畜 。 [kjv] And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle? [bbe] And am I not to have mercy on Nineveh, that great town, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons without the power of judging between right and left, as well as much cattle?
