Meanwhile, an entirely1 different scene was being enacted2 in the drawing-room. All her life Mrs. Rent had lived most placidly3. She had never been confronted with a crisis like this. Indeed, the mere4 suggestion that such a cataclysm5 could have happened in the family would have moved her to gentle scorn.
