NIGHT came, but the orb1 of night was invisible to the inhabitants of the earth, for she was just in her first quarter. The dim light of the stars was all that illumined the plain. The waters of the Guamini ran silently, like a sheet of oil over a surface of marble. Glenarvan, Robert, and Thalcave, had followed the common example, and lay in profound slumber4 on their soft couch of lucerne. However, the Indian’s sleep did not last long; for about ten o’clock he woke, sat up, and turned his ear toward the plain, listening intently, with half-closed eyes.
