Plato and Pythagoras say that the soul is immortal1; when it departs out of the body, it retreats to the soul of the world, which is a being of the same nature with it. The Stoics3, when the souls leave the bodies, they are carried to divers4 places; the souls of the unlearned and ignorant descend5 to the coagmentation of earthly things, but the learned and vigorous last till the general fire. Epicurus and Democritus, the soul is mortal, and it perisheth with the body. Plato and Pythagoras, that part of the soul of man which is rational is eternal; for though it be not God, yet it is the product of an eternal deity6; but that part of the soul which is divested7 of reason dies.
