[kjv]  Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth1 into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail2 with child: for more are the children of the desolate3 than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
[bbe]  Let your voice be loud in song, O woman without children; make melody and sounds of joy, you who did not give birth: for the children of her who had no husband are more than those of the married wife, says the Lord.
    [kjv]  Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen4 thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;
[bbe]  Make wide the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your house be stretched out without limit: make your cords long, and your tent-pins strong.
[kjv]  For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
[bbe]  For I will make wide your limits on the right hand and on the left; and your seed will take the nations for a heritage, and make the waste towns full of people.
[kjv]  Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.
[bbe]  Have no fear; for you will not be shamed or without hope: you will not be put to shame, for the shame of your earlier days will go out of your memory, and you will no longer keep in mind the sorrows of your widowed years.
[kjv]  For thy Maker5 is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
[bbe]  For your Maker is your husband; the Lord of armies is his name: and the Holy One of Israel is he who takes up your cause; he will be named the God of all the earth.
[kjv]  For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken6 and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.
[bbe]  For the Lord has made you come back to him, like a wife who has been sent away in grief of spirit; for one may not give up the wife of one's early days.
[kjv]  For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.
[bbe]  For a short time I gave you up; but with great mercies I will take you back again.
[kjv]  In a little wrath7 I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting8 kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.
[bbe]  In overflowing9 wrath my face was veiled from you for a minute, but I will have pity on you for ever, says the Lord who takes up your cause.
[kjv]  For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke10 thee.
[bbe]  For this is like the days of Noah to me: for as I took an oath that the waters of Noah would never again go over the earth, so have I taken an oath that I will not again be angry with you, or say bitter words to you.
[kjv]  For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant11 of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
[bbe]  For the mountains may be taken away, and the hills be moved out of their places, but my love will not be taken from you, or my agreement of peace broken, says the Lord, who has had mercy on you.
[kjv]  O thou afflicted12, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold13, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires14.
[bbe]  O troubled one, storm-crushed, uncomforted! see, your stones will be framed in fair colours, and your bases will be sapphires.
[kjv]  And I will make thy windows of agates15, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.
[bbe]  I will make your towers of rubies16, and your doors of carbuncles, and the wall round you will be of all sorts of beautiful stones.
[kjv]  And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
[bbe]  And all your builders will be made wise by the Lord; and great will be the peace of your children.
[kjv]  In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
[bbe]  All your rights will be made certain to you: have no fear of evil, and destruction will not come near you.
[kjv]  Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.
[bbe]  See, they may be moved to war, but not by my authority: all those who come together to make an attack on you, will be broken against you.
[kjv]  Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
[bbe]  See, I have made the iron-worker, blowing on the burning coals, and making the instrument of war by his work; and I have made the waster for destruction.
[kjv]  No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper17; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment18 thou shalt condemn19. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
[bbe]  No instrument of war which is formed against you will be of any use; and every tongue which says evil against you will be judged false. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness comes from me, says the Lord.
