[kjv]  At the same time, saith the LORD, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.
[bbe]  At that time, says the Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.
[kjv]  Thus saith the LORD, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness1; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.
[bbe]  The Lord has said, Grace came in the waste land to a people kept safe from the sword, even to Israel on the way to his resting-place.
[kjv]  The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting2 love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn3 thee.
[bbe]  From far away he saw the Lord: my love for you is an eternal love: so with mercy I have made you come with me.
[kjv]  Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin4 of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned5 with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth6 in the dances of them that make merry.
[bbe]  I will again make new your buildings, O virgin of Israel, and you will take up your place: again you will take up your instruments of music, and go out in the dances of those who are glad.
[kjv]  Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.
[bbe]  Again will your vine-gardens be planted on the hill of Samaria: the planters will be planting and using the fruit.
[kjv]  For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God.
[bbe]  For there will be a day when those who get in the grapes on the hills of Ephraim will be crying, Up! let us go up to Zion to the Lord our God.
[kjv]  For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.
[bbe]  For the Lord has said, Make a glad song for Jacob and give a cry on the top of the mountains: give the news, give praise, and say, The Lord has given salvation7 to his people, even to the rest of Israel.
[kjv]  Behold8, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame9, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither10.
[bbe]  See, I will take them from the north country, and get them from the inmost parts of the earth, and with them the blind and the feeble-footed, the woman with child and her who is in birth-pains together: a very great army, they will come back here.
[kjv]  They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
[bbe]  They will come with weeping, and going before them I will be their guide: guiding them by streams of water in a straight way where there is no falling: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is the first of my sons.
[kjv]  Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles11 afar off, and say, He that scattered12 Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
[bbe]  Give ear to the word of the Lord, O you nations, and give news of it in the sea-lands far away, and say, He who has sent Israel wandering will get him together and will keep him as a keeper does his flock.
[kjv]  For the LORD hath redeemed14 Jacob, and ransomed15 him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.
[bbe]  For the Lord has given a price for Jacob, and made him free from the hands of him who was stronger than he.
[kjv]  Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd13: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
[bbe]  So they will come with songs on the high places, flowing together to the good things of the Lord, to the grain and the wine and the oil, to the young ones of the flock and of the herd: their souls will be like a watered garden, and they will have no more sorrow.
[kjv]  Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
[bbe]  Then the virgin will have joy in the dance, and the young men and the old will be glad: for I will have their weeping turned into joy, I will give them comfort and make them glad after their sorrow.
[kjv]  And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.
[bbe]  I will give the priests their desired fat things, and my people will have a full measure of my good things, says the Lord.
[kjv]  Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation16, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
[bbe]  So has the Lord said: In Ramah there is a sound of crying, weeping and bitter sorrow; Rachel weeping for her children; she will not be comforted for their loss.
[kjv]  Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.
[bbe]  The Lord has said this: Keep your voice from sorrow and your eyes from weeping: for your work will be rewarded, says the Lord; and they will come back from the land of their hater.
[kjv]  And there is hope in thine end, saith the LORD, that thy children shall come again to their own border.
[bbe]  And there is hope for the future, says the Lord; and your children will come back to the land which is theirs.
[kjv]  I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning17 himself thus; Thou hast chastised18 me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke19: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.
[bbe]  Certainly Ephraim's words of grief have come to my ears, You have given me training and I have undergone it like a young cow unused to the yoke: let me be turned and come back, for you are the Lord my God.
[kjv]  Surely after that I was turned, I repented20; and after that I was instructed, I smote21 upon my thigh22: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.
[bbe]  Truly, after I had been turned, I had regret for my ways; and after I had got knowledge, I made signs of sorrow: I was put to shame, truly, I was covered with shame, because I had to undergo the shame of my early years.
[kjv]  Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels23 are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.
[bbe]  Is Ephraim my dear son? is he the child of my delight? for whenever I say things against him, I still keep him in my memory: so my heart is troubled for him; I will certainly have mercy on him, says the Lord.
[kjv]  Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the highway, even the way which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.
[bbe]  Put up guiding pillars, make road signs for yourself: give attention to the highway, even the way in which you went: be turned again, O virgin of Israel, be turned to these your towns.
[kjv]  How long wilt24 thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.
[bbe]  How long will you go on turning this way and that, O wandering daughter? for the Lord has made a new thing on the earth, a woman changed into a man.
[kjv]  Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity25; The LORD bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness.
[bbe]  So the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, has said, Again will these words be used in the land of Judah and in its towns, when I have let their fate be changed: May the blessing26 of the Lord be on you, O resting-place of righteousness, O holy mountain.
[kjv]  And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together, husbandmen, and they that go forth with flocks.
[bbe]  And Judah and all its towns will be living there together; the farmers and those who go about with flocks.

[kjv]  And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict29; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD.
[bbe]  And it will come about that, as I have been watching over them for the purpose of uprooting30 and smashing down and overturning and sending destruction and causing trouble; so I will be watching over them for the purpose of building up and planting, says the Lord.

[kjv]  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
