[kjv]  Woe1 is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.
[bbe]  Sorrow is mine! for I am as when they have got in the summer fruits, like the last of the grapes: there is nothing for food, not even an early fig2 for my desire.
[kjv]  The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.
[bbe]  The good man is gone from the earth, there is no one upright among men: they are all waiting secretly for blood, every man is going after his brother with a net.
[kjv]  That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous3 desire: so they wrap it up.
[bbe]  Their hands are made ready to do evil; the ruler makes requests for money, and the judge is looking for a reward; and the great man gives decisions at his pleasure, and the right is twisted.
[kjv]  The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity.
[bbe]  The best of them is like a waste plant, and their upright ones are like a wall of thorns. Sorrow! the day of their fate has come; now will trouble come on them.
[kjv]  Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom4.
[bbe]  Put no faith in a friend, do not let your hope be placed in a relation: keep watch on the doors of your mouth against her who is resting on your breast.
[kjv]  For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house.
[bbe]  For the son puts shame on his father, the daughter goes against her mother and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's haters are those of his family.
[kjv]  Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation5: my God will hear me.
[bbe]  But as for me, I am looking to the Lord; I am waiting for the God of my salvation: the ears of my God will be open to me.
[kjv]  Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
[bbe]  Do not be glad because of my sorrow, O my hater: after my fall I will be lifted up; when I am seated in the dark, the Lord will be a light to me.
[kjv]  I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment6 for me: he will bring me forth7 to the light, and I shall behold8 his righteousness.
    [bbe]  I will undergo the wrath9 of the Lord, because of my sin against him; till he takes up my cause and does what is right for me: when he makes me come out into the light, I will see his righteousness;
[kjv]  Then she that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her which said unto me, Where is the LORD thy God? mine eyes shall behold her: now shall she be trodden down as the mire10 of the streets.
[bbe]  And my hater will see it and be covered with shame; she who said to me, Where is the Lord your God? my eyes will see their desire effected on her, now she will be crushed under foot like the dust of the streets.
[kjv]  In the day that thy walls are to be built, in that day shall the decree be far removed.
[bbe]  A day for building your walls! in that day will your limits be stretched far and wide.
[kjv]  In that day also he shall come even to thee from Assyria, and from the fortified11 cities, and from the fortress12 even to the river, and from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.
[bbe]  In that day they will come to you from Assyria and the towns of Egypt, and from Egypt even to the River, and from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain.
[kjv]  Notwithstanding the land shall be desolate13 because of them that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings.
[bbe]  But the land will become a waste because of its people, as the fruit of their works.
[kjv]  Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, which dwell solitarily14 in the wood, in the midst of Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.
[bbe]  Keep your people safe with your rod, the flock of your heritage, living by themselves in the woods in the middle of Carmel: let them get their food in Bashan and Gilead as in the past.
[kjv]  According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I shew unto him marvellous things.
[bbe]  As in the days when you came out from the land of Egypt, let us see things of wonder.
[kjv]  The nations shall see and be confounded at all their might: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall be deaf.
[bbe]  The nations will see and be shamed because of all their strength; they will put their hands on their mouths, their ears will be stopped.
[kjv]  They shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of thee.
[bbe]  They will take dust as their food like a snake, like the things which go flat on the earth; they will come shaking with fear out of their secret places: they will come with fear to the Lord our God, full of fear because of you.
[kjv]  Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity15, and passeth by the transgression16 of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
[bbe]  Who is a God like you, offering forgiveness for evil-doing and overlooking the sins of the rest of his heritage? he does not keep his wrath for ever, because his delight is in mercy.
[kjv]  He will turn again, he will have compassion17 upon us; he will subdue18 our iniquities19; and thou wilt20 cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
[bbe]  He will again have pity on us; he will put our sins under his feet: and you will send all our sins down into the heart of the sea.
[kjv]  Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.
