[kjv]  Take heed1 that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
[bbe]  Take care not to do your good works before men, to be seen by them; or you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
[kjv]  Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet2 before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
[bbe]  When then you give money to the poor, do not make a noise about it, as the false-hearted men do in the Synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Truly, I say to you, They have their reward.
[kjv]  But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
[bbe]  But when you give money, let not your left hand see what your right hand does:
[kjv]  That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
[bbe]  So that your giving may be in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward.
[kjv]  And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing3 in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
[bbe]  And when you make your prayers, be not like the false-hearted men, who take pleasure in getting up and saying their prayers in the Synagogues and at the street turnings so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
[kjv]  But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
[bbe]  But when you make your prayer, go into your private room, and, shutting the door, say a prayer to your Father in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward.
[kjv]  But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
[bbe]  And in your prayer do not make use of the same words again and again, as the Gentiles do: for they have the idea that God will give attention to them because of the number of their words.
[kjv]  Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
[bbe]  So be not like them; because your Father has knowledge of your needs even before you make your requests to him.
[kjv]  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
[bbe]  Let this then be your prayer: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
[kjv]  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
[bbe]  Let your kingdom come. Let your pleasure be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
[kjv]  Give us this day our daily bread.
[bbe]  Give us this day bread for our needs.
[kjv]  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors4.
[bbe]  And make us free of our debts, as we have made those free who are in debt to us.
[kjv]  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
[bbe]  And let us not be put to the test, but keep us safe from the Evil One.
[kjv]  For if ye forgive men their trespasses5, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
[bbe]  For if you let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will have forgiveness from your Father in heaven.
[kjv]  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
[bbe]  But if you do not let men have forgiveness for their sins, you will not have forgiveness from your Father for your sins.
[kjv]  Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance6: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
[bbe]  And when you go without food, be not sad-faced as the false-hearted are. For they go about with changed looks, so that men may see that they are going without food. Truly I say to you, They have their reward.
    [kjv]  But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
    [bbe]  But when you go without food, put oil on your head and make your face clean;
[kjv]  That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
[bbe]  So that no one may see that you are going without food, but your Father in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will give you your reward.
[kjv]  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth7 and rust8 doth corrupt9, and where thieves break through and steal:
[bbe]  Make no store of wealth for yourselves on earth, where it may be turned to dust by worms and weather, and where thieves may come in by force and take it away.
[kjv]  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
[bbe]  But make a store for yourselves in heaven, where it will not be turned to dust and where thieves do not come in to take it away:
[kjv]  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
[bbe]  For where your wealth is, there will your heart be.
[kjv]  The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
[bbe]  The light of the body is the eye; if then your eye is true, all your body will be full of light.
[kjv]  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
[bbe]  But if your eye is evil, all your body will be dark. If then the light which is in you is dark, how dark it will be!
[kjv]  No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
[bbe]  No man is able to be a servant to two masters: for he will have hate for the one and love for the other, or he will keep to one and have no respect for the other. You may not be servants of God and of wealth.
[kjv]  Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
[bbe]  So I say to you, Take no thought for your life, about food or drink, or about clothing for your body. Is not life more than food, and the body more than its clothing?
[kjv]  Behold10 the fowls11 of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
[bbe]  See the birds of heaven; they do not put seeds in the earth, they do not get in grain, or put it in store-houses; and your Father in heaven gives them food. Are you not of much more value than they?
[kjv]  Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature12?
[bbe]  And which of you by taking thought is able to make himself a cubit taller?
[kjv]  And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil13 not, neither do they spin:
[bbe]  And why are you troubled about clothing? See the flowers of the field, how they come up; they do no work, they make no thread:
[kjv]  And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
[bbe]  But I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.
[kjv]  Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
[bbe]  But if God gives such clothing to the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is put into the oven, will he not much more give you clothing, O you of little faith?
[kjv]  Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
[bbe]  Then do not be full of care, saying, What are we to have for food or drink? or, With what may we be clothed?
[kjv]  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
[bbe]  Because the Gentiles go in search of all these things: for your Father in heaven has knowledge that you have need of all these things:
[kjv]  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
[bbe]  But let your first care be for his kingdom and his righteousness; and all these other things will be given to you in addition.
[kjv]  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
[bbe]  Then have no care for tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Take the trouble of the day as it comes.
