[kjv]  Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
[bbe]  Then there came to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,
[kjv]  Why do thy disciples1 transgress2 the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
[bbe]  Why do your disciples go against the teaching of the fathers? for they take food with unwashed hands.
[kjv]  But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
[bbe]  And in answer he said to them, Why do you, yourselves, go against the word of God on account of the teaching which has been handed down to you?
[kjv]  For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
[bbe]  For God said, Give honour to your father and mother: and, He who says evil of father or mother will be put to death.
    [kjv]  But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever3 thou mightest be profited by me;
    [bbe]  But you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, That by which you might have had profit from me is given to God;
[kjv]  And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
[bbe]  There is no need for him to give honour to his father. And you have made the word of God without effect because of your teaching.
[kjv]  Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy4 of you, saying,
[bbe]  You false ones, well did Isaiah say of you,
[kjv]  This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
[bbe]  These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
[kjv]  But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines5 the commandments of men.
[bbe]  But their worship is to no purpose, while they give as their teaching the rules of men.
[kjv]  And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
[bbe]  And he got the people together and said to them, Give ear, and let my words be clear to you:
[kjv]  Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
[bbe]  Not that which goes into the mouth makes a man unclean, but that which comes out of the mouth.
[kjv]  Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
[bbe]  Then the disciples came and said to him, Did you see that the Pharisees were troubled when these words came to their ears?
[kjv]  But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
[bbe]  But he said in answer, Every plant which my Father in heaven has not put in the earth, will be taken up by the roots.
[kjv]  Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
[bbe]  Let them be: they are blind guides. And if a blind man is guiding a blind man, the two will go falling into a hole together.
[kjv]  Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable7.
[bbe]  Then Peter said to him, Make the story clear to us.
[kjv]  And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
[bbe]  And he said, Are you, like them, still without wisdom?
[kjv]  Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly8, and is cast out into the draught9?
[bbe]  Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth goes on into the stomach, and is sent out as waste?
[kjv]  But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth10 from the heart; and they defile6 the man.
[bbe]  But the things which come out of the mouth come from the heart; and they make a man unclean.
[kjv]  For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies11:
[bbe]  For out of the heart come evil thoughts, the taking of life, broken faith between the married, unclean desires of the flesh, taking of property, false witness, bitter words:
[kjv]  These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
[bbe]  These are the things which make a man unclean; but to take food with unwashed hands does not make a man unclean.
