    [kjv]  Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.
    [bbe]  Then certain of the responsible men of Israel came to me and took their seats before me.
    [kjv]  And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
    [bbe]  And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
    [kjv]  Son of man, these men have set up their idols1 in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity2 before their face: should I be enquired4 of at all by them?
    [bbe]  Son of man, these men have taken their false gods into their hearts and put before their faces the sin which is the cause of their fall: am I to give ear when they come to me for directions?
    [kjv]  Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;
    [bbe]  For this cause say to them, These are the words of the Lord: Every man of Israel who has taken his false god into his heart, and put before his face the sin which is the cause of his fall, and comes to the prophet; I the Lord will give him an answer by myself in agreement with the number of his false gods;
    [kjv]  That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged5 from me through their idols.
    [bbe]  So as to take the children of Israel in the thoughts of their hearts, because they have become strange to me through their false gods.
    [kjv]  Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent6, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
    [bbe]  For this cause say to the children of Israel, These are the words of the Lord: Come back and give up your false gods and let your faces be turned from your disgusting things.
    [kjv]  For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire3 of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:
    [bbe]  When any one of the men of Israel, or of those from other lands who are living in Israel, who has become strange to me, and takes his false gods into his heart, and puts before his face the sin which is the cause of his fall, comes to the prophet to get directions from me; I the Lord will give him an answer by myself:
    [kjv]  And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
    [bbe]  And my face will be turned against that man, and I will make him a sign and a common saying, cutting him off from among my people; and you will be certain that I am the Lord.
    [kjv]  And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
    [bbe]  And if the prophet, tricked by deceit, says anything, it is I the Lord by whom he has been tricked, and I will put out my hand against him, and he will be cut off from among my people Israel.
    [kjv]  And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him;
    [bbe]  And the punishment of their sin will be on them: the sin of the prophet will be the same as the sin of him who goes to him for directions;
    [kjv]  That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither be polluted any more with all their transgressions7; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.
    [bbe]  So that the children of Israel may no longer go wandering away from me, or make themselves unclean with all their wrongdoing; but they will be my people, and I will be their God, says the Lord.
    [kjv]  The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,
    [bbe]  And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
    [kjv]  Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing8 grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
    [bbe]  Son of man, when a land, sinning against me, does wrong, and my hand is stretched out against it, and the support of its bread is broken, and I make it short of food, cutting off man and beast from it:
    [kjv]  Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.
    [bbe]  Even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, only themselves would they keep safe by their righteousness, says the Lord.
    [kjv]  If I cause noisome9 beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate10, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:
    [bbe]  Or if I send evil beasts through the land causing destruction and making it waste, so that no man may go through because of the beasts:
    [kjv]  Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.
    [bbe]  Even if these three men were in it, by my life, says the Lord, they would not keep safe their sons or daughters, but only themselves, and the land would be made waste.
    [kjv]  Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:
    [bbe]  Or if I send a sword against that land, and say, Sword, go through the land, cutting off from it man and beast:
    [kjv]  Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.
    [bbe]  Even if these three men were in it, by my life, says the Lord, they would not keep safe their sons or daughters, but only themselves.
    [kjv]  Or if I send a pestilence11 into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:
    [bbe]  Or if I send disease into that land, letting loose my wrath12 on it in blood, cutting off from it man and beast:
    [kjv]  Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
    [bbe]  Even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, by my life, says the Lord, they would not keep son or daughter safe; only themselves would they keep safe through their righteousness.
    [kjv]  For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments13 upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
    [bbe]  For this is what the Lord has said: How much more when I send my four bitter punishments on Jerusalem, the sword and need of food and evil beasts and disease, cutting off from it man and beast?
    [kjv]  Yet, behold14, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth15, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
    [bbe]  But truly, there will still be a small band who will be safe, even sons and daughters: and they will come out to you, and you will see their ways and their doings: and you will be comforted about the evil which I have sent on Jerusalem, even about everything I have sent on it.
    [kjv]  And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.
    [bbe]  They will give you comfort when you see their ways and their doings: and you will be certain that not for nothing have I done all the things I have done in it, says the Lord.
