[kjv]  Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite1 the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.
[bbe]  Now you will give yourselves deep wounds for grief; they will put up a wall round us: they will give the judge of Israel a blow on the face with a rod.
[kjv]  But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth2 unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting3.
[bbe]  And you, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, the least among the families of Judah, out of you one will come to me who is to be ruler in Israel; whose going out has been purposed from time past, from the eternal days.
[kjv]  Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
[bbe]  For this cause he will give them up till the time when she who is with child has given birth: then the rest of his brothers will come back to the children of Israel.
[kjv]  And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty4 of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide5: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
[bbe]  And he will take his place and give food to his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the glory of the name of the Lord his God; and their resting-place will be safe: for now he will be great to the ends of the earth.
[kjv]  And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.
[bbe]  And this will be our peace: when the Assyrian comes into our country and his feet are in our land, then we will put up against him seven keepers of the flocks and eight chiefs among men.
[kjv]  And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.
[bbe]  And they will make waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod with the edge of the sword: he will give us salvation6 from the Assyrian when he comes into our country, when his feet come inside the limit of our land.
[kjv]  And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.
[bbe]  And the rest of Jacob will be among the mass of peoples like dew from the Lord, like showers on the grass, which may not be kept back by man, or be waiting for the sons of men.
[kjv]  And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.
[bbe]  And the rest of Jacob will be among the nations, in the middle of the mass of peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the woods, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep: if he goes through, they will be crushed under foot and pulled to bits, and there will be no saviour7.
[kjv]  Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries8, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.
[bbe]  Your hand is lifted up against those who are against you, and all your haters will be cut off.
[kjv]  And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots:
[bbe]  And it will come about in that day, says the Lord, that I will take away your horses from you, and will give your war-carriages to destruction:
[kjv]  And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds:
[bbe]  I will have the towns of your land cut off and all your strong places pulled down:
[kjv]  And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:
[bbe]  I will put an end to your use of secret arts, and you will have no more readers of signs:
[kjv]  Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing9 images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.
[bbe]  And I will have your images and your pillars cut off from you; and you will no longer give worship to the work of your hands.
[kjv]  And I will pluck up thy groves10 out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities.
