[kjv]  Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest1: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
[bbe]  Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was full of fear at meeting David, and said to him, Why are you by yourself, having no man with you?
[kjv]  And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
[bbe]  And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has given me orders and has said to me, Say nothing to anyone about the business on which I am sending you and the orders I have given you: and a certain place has been fixed2 to which the young men are to go.
[kjv]  Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.
[bbe]  So now, if you have here five cakes of bread, give them into my hand, or whatever you have.
[kjv]  And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
[bbe]  And the priest, answering David, said, I have no common bread here but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.
[kjv]  And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels3 of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel4.
[bbe]  And David in answer said to the priest, Certainly women have been kept from us; and as has been done before when I have gone out the arms of the young men were made holy, even though it was a common journey; how much more today will their arms be made holy.
[kjv]  So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
[bbe]  So the priest gave him the holy bread: there was no other, only the holy bread which had been taken from before the Lord, so that new bread might be put in its place on the day when it was taken away.

[bbe]  Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, kept back before the Lord; his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the strongest of Saul's runners.
[kjv]  And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.
[bbe]  And David said to Ahimelech, Have you no sword or spear with you here? for I have come without my sword and other arms, because the king's business had to be done quickly.
[kjv]  And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine6, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold7, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt8 take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
[bbe]  And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you put to death in the valley of Elah, is here folded in a cloth at the back of the ephod: take that, if you will, for there is no other sword here. And David said, there is no other sword like that; give it to me.

[bbe]  And the servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David, the king of the land? did they not make songs about him in their dances, saying, Saul has put to death thousands, and David tens of thousands?
